The Founder's Message

Dear Readers,

The traditional career path is vanishing. In its wake, many of us feel disoriented and powerless against the tide of AI. Yet, this disruption is precisely the gateway to unprecedented opportunities.

My name is Shan-Yi, the founder of Teal Village, and my intention is to equip people with the one skill that outlasts any economic cycle—the ability to change.

We are currently caught between two realities. Old mindsets and past successes often hinder our adaptation, leaving us skeptical of our self-worth. Conversely, AI democratizes advanced technology, talent now outshines pedigrees, and human judgment has become the new premium. To thrive in the long term, what we need more than another tool or method is the capacity to navigate the unknown and cope with change.

My life is a story of change. With roots in China, I moved west as a teen. Beginning with utter culture shock, I embarked on a journey of transformation, including five career shifts across four continents.

The journey started with conventional education and career choices. After a degree in engineering and an MBA from an Ivy League university, I spent a decade in Fortune 500 companies. That was when I felt restless and dissonant with the predictable career path laying before me. I knew there must be more to life than climbing the corporate ladder. I wanted work that used my talents, gave me joy, autonomy, and a sense of meaning.

I finally mustered the courage to leave and joined a three-person startup. For the first time, I found exactly what I craved: work that utilized my talents and offered me joy, autonomy, and meaning. While deeply enjoying the work, we scaled that startup to tens of millions of dollars in revenue, selling to over a hundred countries within three years.

This experience clarified my life’s direction—to replicate our success and help more people experience the joy of work. Years later, upon reading Frédéric Laloux’s book Reinventing Organizations, I understood such companies are called “Teal” companies: people-serving, highly profitable, and remarkably resilient to uncertainty and volatility.

Over the next two decades, I was determined to identify the underlying principles that make Teal companies successful and replicable. But there was one problem—no roadmap existed. None of my past experiences and training offered even a clue as to where to start. For years, I felt like I was chasing a ghost.

While searching, I pivoted again—this time, becoming a professional leadership coach. Unexpectedly, this shift unlocked what years of research could not: a journey of inner discovery and a spiritual awakening—and ultimately revealed the perfect roadmap to my mission. I realized that outer results are projections of inner qualities.

What I discovered is simple: the formula for creating Teal companies rests on leadership development and spiritual growth—ultimately, the collective ability to change.

Further exploration of Teal principles directed me back to my roots—China. Today, it hosts thousands of Teal organizations and offers the largest single-country repository of practical case studies.

As the only country on earth with over 5,000 years of continuous civilization, China has endured countless natural disasters, dynastic shifts, and foreign invasions throughout history. This survival has forged a cultural emphasis on collective harmony, long-term thinking, and adaptive pragmatism—principles that directly mirror the DNA of Teal organizations. This provides a treasure trove for understanding Teal, both in theory and in practice.

Now, I am ready to share this blueprint through Teal Village. This venture is the culmination of my life’s preparation, but it is not a solo hero’s journey. It requires collective intelligence, collaboration, and shared purpose—all directed toward the greater good.

If you want to be part of a world where you can access opportunities, create prosperity, work with joy, and contribute with generosity, I invite you to join us on this journey.

Shan-Yi
